It Won't Happen, But...
I think, from what I've read and understand, that Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (as well as, admittedly, Republicans, Pitts, Aderholts and Wolfe-although they are backbenchers and are not as visible or have as much power as the U.S. Speaker of the House) may be in violation of U.S. Code: Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 45, ยง 953 Private correspondence with foreign governments, aka the Logan Act.
She took it upon herself to visit the president of Syria, Bashar Assad. I have no doubt that she did this to undermine President Bush, just as the Democrats have done since day one and have had political egg on their face when "no" weapons of mass destruction were found. That is of course if you don't count:
* A prison laboratory complex that may have been used for human testing of BW [biological weapons] agents and that "Iraqi officials working to prepare the U.N. inspections were explicitly ordered not to declare to the U.N. "why was Saddam interested in testing biological-warfare agents on humans if he didn't have a biological weapons program?"
* "Reference strains" of a wide variety of biological-weapons agents were found beneath the sink of a prominent Iraqi BW scientist. "We thought it was a big deal,"a senior administration official said. "But it has been written off [by the press] as a sort of "starter set".
* New research on BW-applicable agents, brucella and Congo-Crimean hemmoragic fever and continuing work on ricin and aflatoxin that were not declared to the United Nations.
* A line of unmanned aerial vehicles, UAVs, or drones, "not fully declared at an undeclared production facility and an admission that they had tested one of their delared UAVs out to a range of 500 kilometers [311 miles], 350 kilometers [217 miles] beyond the permissible limit".
* "Continuing covert capability to manufacture fuel propellant usful only for prohibited Scud-variant missles, a capability that was maintained until at least the end of 2001 and that co-operating Iraqi scientists have said that they were to conceal from the U.N."
* Plans and advanced design work for new long-range missles with ranges up tp at least 1,000 kilometers [621 miles] -well beyond the 150 kilometer range-limit [93 miles] imposed by the U.N." Missles of a 1,000 kilometer range would have allowed Iraq to threaten targets throughout the Middle East, including Ankara [Turkey] Cairo [Egypt] and Abu Dhabi, [United Arab Emirates]."
AND, as a poster at NewsBusters who goes by the name of "Mr. Bishop" reminded me...
"WMD's have been found in Iraq. There is a nice list of these available for you to read on the forums. I'd have to look it up, but it's there. In addition to this, by the way, the binary components for VX were found, and in mass quantities in Iraqi military warehouses. The problem? Since the two components have additional non-military uses, they were not considered miltiary stockpiles of WMD -- nevermind the fact they were in a military warehouse, and nevermind the fact that when you mix the two chemicals (in the same warehouse) together, you get VX. That completely aside -- you don't have an edge on Bush's mental or religious frame of mind, so you can't possibly insist that Iraq is a religious war. You have no evidence to this, but there is evidence to the contrary."
But I digress. Anyways, Ms. Pelosi may have, and as I have said, as far as I understand is guilty of trampling on this:
"Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.
This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply, himself or his agent, to any foreign government or the agents thereof for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects."
Let' s suppose she is able to "cut a deal" with Assad, doesn't it remind you of something that happened back in 1939 with a guy that had the initials, A.H. Hmm, strangely yes.
*And naysayers, please don't try to bring up Reagan and the so-called "October Surprise" because it's simply not true.
